インド洋ダイポール現象は地球全体の気候に影響する気候現象であり、正と負の符号がある異常変動です。正のインド洋ダイポール現象が発生するとインド洋東部の海面水温が平年よりも下がり、その後すぐに西部の海面水温が上がります。こうした水温の変化によって対流活動がインド洋の東部から西部に大きく移動し、インド洋の東部では干ばつ、西部では水害が発生します。
私たちは、コンピュータモデルを用いてインド洋ダイポール現象が発生するメカニズムを研究しています。研究内容は、インド洋ダイポール現象のダイナミクス、同現象が地球全体の気候に与える影響、同現象とエルニーニョ?南方振動との相互作用の仕組みなどです。
